Black Friday Freebies for You and Nature

I'm not a massive fan of Black Friday, it feels like punishing the loyalty of the amazing support you've shown again this year to suddenly stick everything on sale. So instead, between now and Monday night (29th November), for every single order placed on katemoby.com no matter what size, I'll be planting one tree by partnering with One Tree Planted. We're hearing more all the time about the importance of repairing and safeguarding the natural world, and this feels like something tangible that I can do, with your help making it possible. A few ace tree facts:

• Trees provide homes to 80% of terrestrial biodiversity, but even one more tree can make a huge difference - adding one tree to an open pasture can increase its bird biodivesity from almost zero species to as high as 80.

• Trees can "talk" to each other and even share nutrients, water and carbon to its neighbours by an underground system created by fungi in the soil.

• It's scientifically proves that just by looking at trees we can feel happier, less stressed and more creative. One of the reasons is that they release chemicals called phytoncides, that when we breathe can reduce blood pressure, increase pain threshold, lower anxiety and even boost levels of anti-cancer proteins! There are loads of systems at work that make this happen and there are beautifully researched books that explain more. One of my favourites is Losing Eden by Lucy Jones.
  

• Trees help each other ward off predators by releasing airborne chemical signals - they tell their neighbours to produce more tannins, which will make their leaves taste bitter so the insects leave them alone. Some trees even summon predators to help - an apple tree under attach by caterpillars can release chemicals that attract caterpillar-eating birds!
• Trees help mitigate against flooding, soil erosion, provide us with oxygen and absorb huge amounts of carbon. Yet we're cutting them down at a faster rate than ever before. 20% of the world's oxygen is produced in the Amazon forest, yet every 1.2 seconds, mankind destroys an area of forest the size of a football field.
